The Mythology Behind The Origin of Holi: -

Hiranakashyap

There are many stories in mythology that gives the various reason behind the origin of the Holi celebration.

One of the most famous is the story of Demon Hiranakashyap. He was the king of all Ashuras (evils) and had got boons from Lord Brahma. These boons were very powerful that made it impossible to defeat and kill him. Boons were such that, neither an animal nor a man can kill him, he would neither die at day nor night, he would neither die at land nor sky. Due to his extreme power, he conquered the whole universe and grew very arrogant. He forced everyone to worship him like a God. But his own son Prahlad was adamant to worship as God.

Prahlad was a great devotee of God Vishnu therefore Hiranakashyap started loathing him. He tried every evil way to change the heart of Prahlad but nothing changed. So, he convinced his sister Holika to teach him a lesson. Holika has a mystical cloak that makes her immune to fire. So, she tricked Prahlada into sitting in the fire with her. But somehow cloak flew away and encased Prahalad. Therefore, Holika burnt into ashes but Prahlad was completely safe. After that, Lord Vishnu took Avatar of Narasimha.

Narsimha form of Vishnu was a half lion and a half-human so it was neither a human nor an animal. He killed Hiranakashyap on his lap which is neither a sky nor land and at dusk which is neither night nor day. From that day, people celebrate Holi as a symbol of victory of good over evil.

Holika Dahan (Burn all Your Negativities)

Holika-Dahan

It is celebrated as a remembrance of the Death of Holika who was trying to kill Prahlad.

Holika Dahan is celebrated on the evening of Purnima (full moon night) on the first day of Falgun month (by Hindu calendar). The following day is celebrated as Holi. On Holika Dahan, people light a bonfire, perform various rituals, and rejoice. On this occasion, people take wood from the burnt pyre to keep it at home. These burnt pieces of wood are considered auspicious.

In the end, people dance and sing around bonfires with great exuberance. After that, people eat special delicacies of this festival. In many states Laddoo celebrations happen. Desserts are tossed around and otherworldly tunes of Radha Krishna are sung.
