ToggleBhai Dooj 2026: Date, Tilak Vidhi & Significance
Bhai Dooj celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It is the last day of the five-day Diwali period and is observed with a tilak ceremony, a festive meal and the exchange of blessings and gifts. It is different from Raksha Bandhan: on Bhai Dooj the sister applies a tilak, while on Raksha Bandhan she ties a rakhi.
Bhai Dooj 2026 Date and Tilak Timing
Bhai Dooj 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November in India, one day after Govardhan Puja. In the UK and UAE, panchangs list it on Tuesday, 10 November. The tilak is traditionally applied in the afternoon (Aparahna kaal), so check the exact muhurat for your city in a trusted panchang.
The Story of Yama and Yamuna
According to tradition, Yamuna invited her brother Yama, the god of death, to her home after a long time. She welcomed him with a tilak, aarti and a meal. Touched by her love, Yama gave her a boon: any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day will be blessed with long life and freedom from fear. This is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya, and why many people bathe in the Yamuna on this day.
Puja Thali for Bhai Dooj
- Roli (kumkum) and akshat (unbroken rice)
- A diya, incense and a small bowl of water
- Coconut, betel nut or dry fruit
- Sweets and a handful of flowers
- A clean cloth or handkerchief for the brother
Bhai Dooj Tilak Vidhi Step by Step
The brother sits facing north-east or east, on a clean seat, with a handkerchief on his head or in his hand.
The sister washes her hands, lights the diya and applies the tilak of roli and rice on his forehead.
She offers a coconut or dry fruit, performs aarti and prays for his health, happiness and protection.
She feeds him sweets and, in many homes, a special meal.
The brother gives a gift or blessing, and promises to protect and support her.
Note : Customs vary by region and family. If a sister lives far away, many families apply the tilak on a video call or send a tilak kit, and the spirit of the day remains the same
