ToggleReiki Meaning: What Does the Word Mean?
A Short History of Usui Reiki
Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual seeker, is credited with developing the system in the early 1920s. After his death, his students carried it to different parts of the world, and today several lineages exist. The most widely taught form is known as Usui Reiki.
How Does a Reiki Session Work?
You sit or lie down, fully clothed, in a quiet room.
The practitioner places their hands gently on or just above a series of positions on the body, such as the head, shoulders, abdomen and feet.
Each position is held for a few minutes. Most people describe the experience as calm, warm or deeply relaxing.
The session usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You may be advised to rest, drink water and take a quiet moment afterwards.
Reiki Levels Explained
Reiki is traditionally taught in levels. Agnitra Foundation offers Usui Reiki training in Level I, Level II, Level III A and Level III B. The table below describes what these levels typically cover across Reiki schools. See the Reiki course page for the exact curriculum, schedule and fees at Agnitra Foundation.
Level | Typical focus |
Level I | Introduction to Reiki, self-healing and hands-on practice for yourself, family and friends |
Level II | Reiki symbols and mantras, deeper practice and distance (absent) Reiki |
Level III A | Advanced practice, preparing to practise Reiki professionally |
Level III B | Master level, learning to teach Reiki and pass on attunements |
Possible Benefits: What Research Says
Many people use Reiki for stress relief, relaxation and a sense of emotional balance. Scientific research on Reiki is limited and the results are mixed. Some small studies report improvements in relaxation and well-being, but there is no proof that Reiki cures or treats medical conditions. For this reason it is best used alongside, and never instead of, professional medical care.
Common Reiki Myths
“Reiki is a religion.” Reiki is a practice that people of any faith or no faith can learn. It does not require you to change your beliefs.
- “Only gifted people can do Reiki.” It is taught through training and practice, and is open to anyone willing to learn.
- “Reiki can cure serious diseases.” No reliable evidence supports this. Please consult a doctor for any health problem.
- “Reiki is the same as massage.” Reiki uses very light touch or no touch and does not involve manipulation of muscles.
How to Choose a Reiki Teacher
Ask about the lineage, the levels taught and the amount of practice included.
- Be wary of anyone promising to cure illnesses or asking you to stop medical treatment.
- Look for clear fees, small groups and a respectful, non-pressuring environment.
- Choose a teacher with long experience. Tantrguru Shree Ganesh Dubey has more than 35 years of experience in Satvik Tantra, healing and holistic sciences, and Agnitra Foundation has trained over 12,000 students.
Agnitra Foundation teaches Reiki in person in Delhi and online. Visit the Reiki course page or make an appointment to learn more.
