ToggleWhat Is the Ardh Kumbh Mela?
The Kumbh Mela is a pilgrimage held in rotation at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. The Ardh (half) Kumbh is held every six years at Haridwar and Prayagraj, while the full Kumbh is held every 12 years at each of the four sites. Haridwar’s last Kumbh was held in 2021, so the next gathering is the Ardh Kumbh of 2027. Authorities have said it will be organised on the scale of a Purna Kumbh.
The tradition connects the Kumbh to the mythological churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), when drops of amrit are believed to have fallen at four places. Haridwar, where the Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains, is one of them.

Why Pilgrims Come to Haridwar
Haridwar means the “Gateway to the Divine”. Pilgrims come to bathe at Har Ki Pauri, attend the evening Ganga aarti, meet saints of the 13 akharas and listen to satsang. Many treat the Kumbh as a time to renew vows, remember ancestors and practise charity.
